Pre & Post Surgery Services

Surgery of any kind is a serious decision. Which is why the bariatrics team at JFK for Life is dedicated to help you with the process. The team of healthcare providers represent a combination of training, expertise, and unique recognition that is unparalleled throughout New Jersey. JFK for Life has the top surgeons in New Jersey to help you maximize your success and improve your quality of life.  We are the only facility in New Jersey that is able to provide you with the entire outpatient care needed in your journey.  Studies have shown that when you embark on the journey of healthy eating and healthy activity the success rate after your surgery increases.

Pre-surgery we offer you not only the support but also the nutritional and psychological evaluations that you will need for your surgery.  We also partner with many primary care physicians, in case you need one, for the medical evaluations.  We will provide you with a comprehensive program consisting of:

  • Visits with a Wellness Advisor to help you keep you on track and coordinate your care.
  • Medical and lifestyle assessment
  • Monthly support group sessions for patients and families.  Speak with those that have already gone through the process. JFK for Life Bariatric Support Group meetings are held the third Thursday of every month at 6:00 pm at the JFK Conference Center at 70 James Street, Edison.
  • A comprehensive pre-operative workup
  • Metabolism diagnostics that will ascertain exactly how your body consumes and burns calories
  • Educational visits with a Registered Dietitian to prepare you for the dietary guidelines you must follow for your surgery to be effective
  • Pre-surgery nutritional and psychological evaluations
  • Set up your surgical evaluations. Our bariatric surgical team performs Gastric Bypass, Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding, Sleeve Gastrectomy, Single Incision, and Capella.
  • Set up your medical evaluation with your primary care physician or one of our partners.

Step 1 - Understand Your Options: Schedule A Visit With A Wellness Advisor

Weight loss surgery is a major step. Schedule a visit with one of our Wellness Advisors to understand your options for weight loss. The Wellness Advisor will listen to your needs and the goals you want to achieve. There are many options to choose from. If you choose to learn more about bariatric surgery they will register you for one of our recommended seminars.

Step 2 - Attend A Bariatric Seminar

At every Bariatric Seminar, a medical professional will educate you on various types of weight loss surgeries. You will have a chance to meet patients who have already undergone bariatric surgery and hear how JFK for Life has helped them succeed. You will also have the opportunity to ask your questions to a panel of experienced bariatric surgeons and nutritionists with extensive track records of proven success.

You can schedule your necessary surgical, nutritional, and psychological evaluations right at the seminar.

Step 3 - Find Out If Your Insurance Covers Bariatric Surgery

Call your insurance company and ensure you have coverage for bariatric surgery. Ask if you have EXCLUSIONS to weight loss surgery, bariatric surgery, obesity surgery or a specific weight loss procedure. Exclusions mean that your insurance carrier does not cover the procedure. If your policy does have exclusions to bariatric surgery, please contact us to discuss non-surgical alternative options. If you do not have exclusions, our team will put in contact with the correct professionals to advise you of what is required to obtain pre authorization for your procedure.

Step 4 - Get Your Nutritional and Psychological Evaluations Completed

All patients must have a Psychological and Nutritional evaluation completed prior to their surgery. We have done thousands of evaluations and know what the insurance companies are looking for to approve surgery. You will also need blood testing and and EGD within the previous six months of the proposed surgery date. Some patients may require additional testing based upon their medical history and individual risk factors. These tests may include, but are not limited to; EKG, Primary Care Clearance, Cardiovascular Clearance, Sleep Study / Pulmonary Clearance, Colonoscopy, Hematological Clearance and others as deemed appropriate. We have partnerships with physicians that perform these examinations.

Step 5 - Improve Your Results: Start Your Pre-Bariatric Program

Studies show that those that start the process of lifestyle change prior to surgery have significantly more success and lose more weight than those who do not. At JFK for Life we have put together a program that is focused on increasing your success. Our Registered Dietitians, Exercise Physiologists, and Licensed Social Workers/Psychologists can work with you to make sure you are well underway to reach your optimal weight even prior to your surgery. Additionally, we have seen more and more insurance companies requiring a 6-month weight loss program prior to approval. Call us and find out how we can help you reach optimal results from your surgery.

Step 6 - Post-Surgical Program

You have spent a lot of time and money on your surgery. Immediately after your surgery it is important to follow strict dietary guidelines to ease your body into your new lifestyle. Call us and schedule a visit with your Wellness Advisor who will put your post-operative plan of care together to help you heal healthy and maximize your results.

Pre-Surgical Program and Evaluations

At JFK for Life we have completed hundreds of pre-surgical evaluations. Your bariatrics team is trained in pinpointing what the insurance companies are looking for from the evaluations and making sure you meet those requirements. If you do not, we will tell you what you need to do to qualify.

Here are some of the things that the insurance companies are looking for and we assess:

  • Your medical history and lifestyle
  • Your weight loss/gain history
  • Your current eating habits
  • Your current exercise habits
  • Your mental/psychological health and any past or current diagnoses
  • Your history or patterns with narcotics use
  • Your support system
  • Your understanding of the surgery
  • Your understanding of the lifestyle changes needed for post-surgery
  • Your willingness to be compliant with these changes

Post-Surgical Program

You have now had a major surgery that will alter the rest of your life.  You have spent a lot of time and money. Research has shown that those who continue with a change in their lifestyle are able to reap the rewards of the surgery and can maximize their weight loss and achieve the quality of life they are looking for.

Our Bariatric Post-Operative Program is designed for exactly that - to maximize your success. It contains:

  • Monitoring your social and psychological adaptations to weight loss
  • Support with ongoing lifestyle changes and unresolved social issues
