The Breast Center at JFK Medical Center is accredited by the American College of Radiology for mammography and stereotactic biopsy and certified by the Food and Drug Administration. Staffed by licensed female technologists and board-certified radiologists, the Breast Center provides comprehensive screening services -- such as mammography, ultrasound and stereotactic biopsy -- to detect and diagnose breast cancer. Also on staff is a registered Breast Nurse Navigator who provides women with support, guidance and resources. The Breast Center accepts physician referrals as well as self- referrals from patients who meet the American Cancer Society guidelines for age and family history. Bone density testing is also offered to women and men for osteoporosis evaluation.
Procedures: (All exams are read on premises.) Routine screening and diagnostic testing is available, check with the scheduling office for times.- Mammography is a film-screen X-ray examination of the breast with extremely low radiation exposure. It is the most accurate and frequently used screening procedure to detect changes in the breast several years before they can be felt.
- Full Field Digital Mammography, like conventional mammography, uses low energy x-rays to pass through the breast but the images are recorded by means of an electronic digital detector instead of on "film." Unique to digital technology, the electronic image can then be displayed on a computer screen as well as printed on film or recorded on a CD. The radiologist can also maneuver the digital mammogram electronically to magnify an area, change contrast, or alter the brightness to better view areas of concern.
- Ultrasound is a radiation-free technique that uses sound waves. Ultrasound can help distinguish normal breast tissue from a fluid filled cyst or a solid mass that appears on a mammogram.
- Stereotactic Breast Biopsy is a state-of-the-art technique that allows a rapid sampling of the breast tissue with minimal discomfort and minimal invasion of the breast.
- Ultrasound Breast Biopsy is a state-of-the-art biopsy technique that allows a rapid sampling of the breast tissue with minimal discomfort and minimal invasion of the breast, using ultrasound guidance.
- Computer-Aided Detection (CAD) is utilized, when applicable, on film and digital mammograms to assist Radiologists in the early detection of breast cancer by providing a digitized second evaluation.
- Bone Density Testing uses a very low dose Dual Energy X-ray beam (DEXA SCAN) to measure bone mineral density and assess osteoporosis and potential bone fracture risk.
