Compassionate Care for Breast DiseaseThe JFK Breast Center has been the recipient of a grant from the Susan G. Komen Foundation for the past five years, Staffed by licensed female technologists, a registered nurse navigator and board-certified radiologists, JFK Medical Center's Breast Center provides comprehensive screening services - mammography, ultrasound and stereotactic biopsy - to detect and diagnose breast cancer. Accredited by the American College of Radiology and certified by the Food and Drug Administration, the Breast Center accepts physician referrals. Educational materials and instruction on breast self-examination are available and Breast Health education programs can be scheduled free of charge for schools or community groups in Middlesex county. In addition to breast care, the Breast Center also offers men and women bone density testing to evaluate and assess osteoporosis.
The Breast Center is located at the Medial Center's Imaging Center, 60 James Street, Edison -- across the street from the hospital campus. All films are read on the premises.
The Breast Center is open:
Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Wednesday, 7:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon
To schedule an appointment for any of the following screening procedures, call 732. 321.7540:Mammography. Low-dose, film-screen mammography is an X-ray examination of the breast with extremely low radiation exposure. It is the most accurate and frequently used screening procedure to detect changes in the breast several years before they can be felt.
Full Field Digital Mammography. As with conventional mammography, digital mammography uses low energy x-rays to pass through the breast, but the images are recorded by means of an electronic digital detector instead of to "film." Unique to digital technology, the electronic image can be displayed on a video monitor or computer screen as well as printed on film or recorded to a CD. The radiologist can maneuver the digital mammogram electronically to magnify an area, change contrast, or alter the brightness to better view areas of concern.
Stereotactic Breast Biopsy. This state-of-the-art needle biopsy technique allows a rapid sampling of the breast tissue with minimal discomfort and minimal invasion of the breast.
Ultrasound. A radiation-free technique that uses sound waves, ultrasound can help distinguish normal breast tissue from a fluid filled cyst or a solid mass that appears on a mammogram.
Ultrasound Breast Biopsy. This state-of-the-art needle biopsy technique allows a rapid sampling of the breast tissue with minimal discomfort and minimal invasion of the breast, using ultrasound guidance.
Computer aided Detection (CAD). When applicapbe, CAD provides a digitized second evaluation of film and digital mammograms to assist Radiologists in the early detection of breast cancer.
Bone Density Testing. Using a very low dose Dual energy x-ray beam (DEXA SCAN), bone mineral density can be measured to assess osteoporosis and potential bone fracture risk.
