Olympian JFK Doctors Helps Swimmer Get Back in the Pool
BC freshman swimmer Devon Black overcame a serious back injury and the catalyst in her return to the pool was a 1992 Olympic swimmer: When Shore Sports Zone brought their camera to a Red Bank Catholic swim meet, you could never tell that freshman swimmer Devon Black had a serious injury. Black had two herniated discs in her back that put her out of the pool in the summer leading up to her freshman campaign.
Devon found her way to the office of Dr. Ron Karnaugh at the JFK Medical Center in Edison. Karnaugh is a spine specialist who is also a specialist when it comes to swimming. The 1992 Olympian finished 6th in the 200 meter individual medley in Barcelona. His story is remarkable. Karnaugh’s father collapsed and died shortly after the Opening Ceremony of the 1992 Summer Games. The late George Steinbrenner, who was part of the US Olympic Committee, formed a friendship with Ron in the face of tragedy. Not only did the New York Yankees owner keep in touch with Karnaugh, he paid his medical school bills that allowed him to become a doctor. Now, Dr. Karnaugh is helping countless patients on the road to recovery and helping a young swimmer was extra special to the former world class competitor.
